Value and final thoughts
The new H-IPS-panel HP LP2475w is stunning. It's an attractive monitor externally and its image quality is absolutely superb across the board, meaning it's an ideal display for gaming, photo editing and watching videos. It wasn't so long ago that finding a display that could provide good image quality in those three things was the holy grail, and while many PVA panels have come close, the H-IPS panel in the LP2475w really does prove itself in taking that extra step. It's such a big step in fact that games in particular look revitalised.
While upgrading your monitor doesn't enhance your PC's performance, the benefits you'll see if you're upgrading from a two year old or older display are on par with a new CPU or graphics card in terms of the wow factor. It really is that impressive. Build quality is also stellar and the stand inspires a lot of confidence as it feels incredibly sturdy and has a pretty low profile too.
While H-IPS technology is very new compared to PVA and TN, we've noticed no drawbacks such as washed-out colours, ghosting or motion blur. The only thing we'd like is a slightly more uniform backglight as when viewing word documents and websites there's a noticeable difference in colour between the centre and edges of the panel.
While there's no getting around the high price of the LP2475w, it's vital to remember this isn't a graphics card or CPU that will be so out of date in a year's time. A good monitor such as the LP2475w will date far more slowly and it's only things like OLED technology which would make any kind of major impact. In this light, the LP2475w is a great purchase.
It comes with a generous warranty and will serve you well for years. After all, the chances are that you'll be looking at it every day, unlike a £400 graphics card which you'll only see the benefit of when you're gaming or folding. If you're in the market for a quality 24in display then hopefully by now you're warming to the price tag a little and rightly so. If that's the case, there really aren't too many other downsides to this display. In fact we think its amazing.
The only thing to be aware of is that there's a chance you might get the old S-IPS version of this screen, as the new H-IPS screen has the same model number as the old. Unfortunately HP has been unable to give us any further details regarding this, so you need to be careful that the monitor you buy hasn't been sitting around in a warehouse for months. However, so long as it was made no earlier than March 2009 then you should be able to avoid the older, less capable LP2475w's with S-IPS panels.
